Social, Cultural, Historical contexts
Timeline
Social context-How you have been influenced or affected by events in society (moving school, getting a new pet, family births/deaths).
Historical context-How you have been influenced or affected by events and social changes from the past. (911, 67 bombing.)
Cultural context-How you have been affected by music, clothing, religion, films, T.V. etc.
Historical context might influence media texts such as cuffs by including a homosexual character. The is evident because one of the main characters (Jake Vickers) is a homosexual police officer. In 2013, same sex marriage was legalised; and in 2014 same sex marriage was legalised in the UK. As Cuffs included a homosexual character as a main character in the program, this is a countertype to the stereotype that police officers are heterosexual, masculine men, as Jake is homosexual and sensitive. This historical issue sends a message to a pre-washed mainstream audience that they are accepted into society because there is nothing wrong with them and they are normal people. It's also telling them that they aren't the only ones and they aren't alone.
What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence a media text?
Media contexts can influence media texts by remembering people who have died. This is an example of historical context. An example of this would be, when Michael Jackson died on 25 June 2009, T.V. programs and films would use his music as non-diegetic sound to remember him. This influences media texts because it encourages them to use more music in the background to add more suspense or to emphasise what is happening in the program.
An example of cultural context that has influenced media texts is music. When someone goes to a music concert for the first time, after seeing artists performing live, it will make them want to listen to music more. This has influenced media texts to advertise music concerts more because it will mean that more people would want to go, and they will make more of a profit from it.
Finally, an example of social context that has influenced media texts is drugs. Lately, society has seen a rise in drug use all over the world. Every 1 in 10 American over the age of 12 is addicted to drugs. This has influenced media texts to portray drugs in their programs and films as bad, and to send a message to people that it's bad to do drugs. They also use drugs much more when stereotyping certain social groups such as the typical African black decent.

What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence a media text (Cuffs)?
The influence of the rise in stabbing crimes occurring in Brighton during the 2010s is represented as a social and cultural issue in television programmes such as 'Cuffs'. This is evident when an Indian boy gets stabbed by a racist, typical white British male gang. The UK government released a document on the rise in Hate Crimes. It reveals a 15% increase in reported racial/religious crimes since 2011.This social and cultural issue sends a message to a pre-washed mainstream audience to make them aware that racism still goes on in the world, and that typical Middle Eastern people have to face it every day. This is a social issue because stabbings affect people in society; and it's a cultural issue because it's directed at a specific group (Indian people).Historical context might influence media texts such as cuffs by including a homosexual character. The is evident because one of the main characters (Jake Vickers) is a homosexual police officer. In 2013, same sex marriage was legalised; and in 2014 same sex marriage was legalised in the UK. The reason I highlighted a part red was because you couldn't see it otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYour final paragraph (drugs) is brilliant. The content within that paragraph specifically draws on the influence of drugs within media texts.

I will mark your first question - What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence a media text (Cuffs) out of 10 marks.
8/10
Your first paragraph is excellent and explains how social contexts can influence television programmes. You have provided a detailed description, with a sophisticated explanation of how it influences programmes with reference to 'Cuffs'. Your structure is also spot on.
Your second paragraph slightly sways from the question, as it is not asking how it will influence a pre-watershed audience, but instead how the social context will influence the media text itself.
Overall, a very strong response to a 10 mark question - make sure you are always reading AND answering the question being asked.
Good job Ben!
