Cuffs first representation exam style question

Analyse how representation is used in the episode to create meaning for a mainstream pre-washed audience. Refer to the text you have studied in your answer. (5 marks)

One of the characters, Jake is represented as a white homosexual male police officer. We know this because Jake Vickers said to Ryan, ”I’m gay.” This statement from Jake does not affect Ryan and his homosexuality challenges the representation of gay characters in the Media. Police officers are usually characterised as heterosexual and masculine, however Jake's character provides a countertype as he is positively represented as homosexual, strong minded and masculine. As he is homosexual, this is saying that it's ok to be different. This creates meaning for a mainstream British audience because there is no foul language and it is sending a message to young people that it is ok to be homosexual and they are accepted into society. As it targeted at a mainstream British audience which is all ages, it wants people to accept who they are, and show them that they are accepted into society because they are normal people and there is nothing wrong with them.

A good first response to an exam question.

    Reflect and Perfect:
When reflecting, please put your text in a green font.

    Your response needs clarity.
For example - "This means that Jake is telling Ryan that he's gay which challenges the stereotype as a countertype of police officers being heterosexual and masculine"
Would read better as - This statement from Jake does not affect Ryan and his homosexuality challenges the representation of gay characters in the Media. They are usually characterised as heterosexual and masculine, however Jake's character provides a countertype as he is positively represented as.......

You also need to change your explanation "This creates meaning for...". Explain WHY meaning is created for a mainstream British audience. Why are they accepted in society?
Go through your response and focus on your phrasing.

This is now a great response, well done!

    Two things to change...
You have slightly jumbled your words, so make sure you read over your responses.
You have written - They are usually characterised as heterosexual and masculine, however Jake's character provides a countertype as he is positively represented as homosexual and weak.
What you meant to write was - Police officers are usually characterised as heterosexual and masculine, however Jake's character provides a countertype as he is positively represented as homosexual, strong minded and masculine.

You have also written " As he is homosexual, this is saying that it's ok to be different". Just because you are homosexual doesn't mean you are different! Be careful not to make these statements!
